Blast near Manipur CM's house

An powerful explosion was reported from near Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh's official residence in state capital Imphal on Sunday night.

There were no immediate reports of casualties, police said.

A police spokesman said the blast took place around 2030 hrs (IST) on the road linking CM's residence and the city's main post office.

"We are not certain about the nature of blast. Probably it was a Chinese grenade and a vehicle was used. We have deployed maximum force in the city. We have some suspects we will zero down on soon," DGP Manipur Y Joykumar Singh told CNN IBN.

Police fear this was a second assassination attempt on CM Ibobi Singh's life in two months.

President Pratibha Patil is also touring the Northeast region and is currently in Guwahati, Assam.

Details are awaited.
